Finished worm castings are the by-product of a process commonly referred to as vermicomposting - or - more easily remembered, composting with worms. Eisenia foetida, aka 'red wigglers', are a kind of worm that live exclusively in decaying matter. Feeding the worms a diet of composted food waste or unprocessed kitchen scraps supercharges the decomposition process. And since the resulting worm castings are pre-digested, they are teeming with microbes and are considered biologically active (includes: beneficial bacteria, enzymes, fungi, etc...).
My worm castings are fresh and are not sterilized so that the hundreds of worm cocoons and billions of micro-organisms are still vital at the time of purchase.
